A robotic dog developed by Japanese inventors to help the blind

Japanese developer NSK in collaboration with the University of Electro-Communications have created a robot that acts as a guide dog.

The robo-dog is equipped with a Microsoft Kinect image and distance sensor that creates a 3-D visualisation of obstacles ahead.

With four jointed legs and wheels, the robot is able to help a visually impaired person to climb steps to a certain place.

In a demonstration video provided by NSK, we can see a blindfolded scientist climbing up the steps of a staircase, guided smoothly by the robot dog.

Controlled by software and by hand pressure, the robot responds to instructions after informing the user of obstacles via a synthetic voice.

NSK is currently working on a system of voice commands as well as the integration of a GPS in the hope to market its robo-dog in 2020.

iPhone 5 rumors: Steve Jobs worked until the end on Apple’s “next product”, says Softbank CEO Masayoshi Son

Until his final days Steve Jobs was dedicated to the company he had co-founded with Steve Wozniak in 1976.

After learning over a million people wrote to express their condolences, Softbank CEO Masayoshi Son recalled an anecdote that shows Jobs’ dedication to his company during an interview conducted last weekend by the U.S. Ambassador to Japan John Roos.

Son said, “I visited Apple for the announcement of the iPhone 4S [at Apple headquarters in Cupertino, California ]. When I was having a meeting with Tim Cook, he said, ‘Oh Masa, sorry I have to quit our meeting.’ I said, ‘Where are you going?’ He said, ‘My boss is calling me.’ That was the day of the announcement of the iPhone 4S. He said that Steve is calling me because he wants to talk about their next product. And the next day, he died.”

While Son didn’t mention any specific product Jobs was working on, recent reports suggest that he may have been concentrating on Apple’s next smartphone, the iPhone 5.

Not long ago, Rodman & Renshaw analyst Ashok Kumar wrote that the next iPhone represents “the last project that Steve Jobs was intimately involved with from concept to final design. For that reason … this product will establish the high water mark for iPhone volumes.”

The analyst added that from the concept to the final design Jobs followed “closely” all the steps, which should make it “cult classic” at the time of its release, probably in the summer of 2012.

Son continued, “Even one day before he passed away, the first subject he wanted to call Tim Cook about…he wanted to talk about the next product… That’s the kind of spirit a true entrepreneur would continue to have until they die. He was very sick, very ill. But the announcement of their newest product made him live longer. Physically he could have died much earlier. But his passion, his love for his own company and dream, about the next products, that made him energized.”

In the research note, Kumar also said the iPhone 5 will likely be released in the summer of 2012.

He believes that the iPhone 5 will adopt a thinner design and a bigger screen while maintaining the size of the iPhone 4S with the technology 4G-LTE.

iPhone 5 release date: rumors and marketing strategy so far

While the world was anxiously waiting for the release of the iPhone 5, Apple thought that the iPhone 4 S would make a good transition model.

An advantageous robbery

This past year, we could say that Apple has kept its customers in a state of surprise as far as the iPhone 5 is concerned.

Back in July, it was reported that a prototype of a future iPhone has been lost by an Apple employee in a bar, just over a year after a similar episode.

Apple promptly contacted the police and tracked the terminal that led to a young man in his 20s living in the neighborhood of Bernal Heights .

The man admitted he had been at the respective bar on the fateful night. However, he denied having any connection with the disappearance of the smartphone which was later sold for $ 200 to a website.

But don’t be sad over Apple’s loss as some speculate the entire episode could have been orchestrated by the Cupertino company. Is it pure coincidence that the hype around the theft was created in the period leading to what many believed was going to be the release of the iPhone 5, or is it simply a very well thought marketing strategy?

And while Apple made no announcement of the theft, Jose Valle, the owner of the bar in question, admitted that he had received several calls from a man asking about a lost iPhone.

iPhone 5 rumored features

In the following weeks, numerous rumors about possible iPhone 5 features swarmed on the net.

According to reports, the gadget is rumored to give up the glass back in favor of an aluminum shell as the original iPhone model which was released in 2007.

This design change would mean that Apple has abandoned the concept of an external antenna, which causes some reception problems with all iPhone 4 models.

As for the technical specifications, most experts speculated that the model will have a slightly larger screen than its predecessor, with a diagonal of about 4 inches, as against 3.5 for existing models. The screen size would be similar to a Samsung S Galaxy Nexus or Google S.

Also, there is talk of a dual-core A5 processor and a camera with a resolution of 8 megapixels.

In addition, Apple is expected to unveil a 4G iPhone to respond to competitors in the LTE smartphone market.

Other rumors circulating on specialized websites indicate the existence of a prototype of the iPhone 5 which has a retractable sliding keyboard. The device would then look like an iPhone 4 but under which it would be possible to drag a physical keyboard.

iPhone 5 to appear in 2012, until then iPhone 4S is what you get

While many were disappointed with the release of the iPhone 4S instead of the iPhone 5, Apple lift spirits by unveiling its latest updated iOS 5.

The revolutionary brand decided to make available the new update for the operating systems of iPhone, iPad and iPod: iOS 5.

The update brought 200 new features, among which the most notable are the Notification Center , fully customizable, the arrival of a unified messaging application iMessage, the new application reminder, which makes sure that you remember important tasks and can even alert you depending on your location.

When Steve Jobs passed away in October, Rodman & Renshaw analyst Ashok Kumar believed that the next iPhone would represent “the last project that Steve Jobs was intimately involved with from concept to final design.”

“For that reason … this product will establish the high water mark for iPhone volumes,” he wrote.

The analyst added that from the concept to the final design Jobs followed “closely” all the steps, which should make it a “cult classic” at the time of its release which many assume to be 2012

Apple is said to be in the process of ordering “volumes for keyparts and components” according to DigiTimes, for next-generation devices, including the iPhone 5 and iPad 3.

Sources claim that the next generation iPad 3 will arrive in stores in Q3, the July to September quarter, of 2012.

As for the iPhone 5, DigiTimes claims that the device is unlikely to be revealed until “the second half of 2012” and that it would be redesigned completely.

Honda presents upgraded version of humanoid robot Asimo

To mark the 11th anniversary of the famous humanoid robot, Honda Robotics introduced the new version of Asimo which now features a series of improved physical and behavioral characteristics.

The 2011 generation of Asimo is also equipped with multiple sensors that make its senses similar to those of humans (vision, hearing, touch). But Honda’s most important improvement is probably the artificial intelligence that drives the robot.

Presented in Tokyo on Tuesday, the latest version of Asimo can bind more complex movements and change its behavior according to the actions of humans around it.

His legs were particularly improved: the new Asimo movements can include jumping on one or both legs, including bending, running at a speed of 9 km / h or running backwards.

He is also able to distinguish the voices of three people speaking at once, using face recognition and analyzing sound, in order to figure out that one woman wanted hot coffee, another orange juice, and another milk tea.

Honda has also improved the hands of their humanoid robot. The palm and fingers of the machine are equipped with touch and force sensors, allowing it to “touch” objects and then manipulate them with precision.

The robot was able to open a thermos bottle and pour juice into a paper cup without spilling a drop.

In addition, Asimo is now able to predict the direction of a person and step aside in order to avoid a collision. It can also stop a current action and change its behavior to adapt to the actions of the partner.

Honda President Takanobu Ito said that Asimo has autonomous artificial intelligence, so that it might go into a crowded area without stopping to check its schedule, adapting to the unexpected in real time. However, Honda officials admit it will take a long time before robots will be mass produced.

Here is the new version of ASIMO:

Albert Haynesworth experiment didn’t work out

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. — While acknowledging the Albert Haynesworth experiment didn’t work out as planned, New England Patriots coach Bill Belichick on Wednesday said it wasn’t for lack of trying.

“I’ll just say this on the Albert situation. I thought that both he and myself — speaking for the (coaching) staff — we really tried to make it work,” said Belichick. “He had a few limitations to overcome when he got here, but I thought he really tried to do what we asked him to do. We tried to work with him. In the end, it just didn’t work out. I think the best thing we could do was move on.”

Belichick was not of a mind to elaborate, interrupting a follow-up question by saying, “That’s all we have to say about it. We’ll talk about the guys that are here and move on to the Jets,” who are the Patriots’ Sunday night opponents.
The coach was pressed as to whether there were injury concerns that contributed to the mammoth defensive tackle’s lack of production and subsequent release.

“No, he missed some time early in camp, but in the end, that all worked out,” said Belichick, who then interrupted the next follow-up question of whether Haynesworth had been worth the risk of giving up a fifth-round 2013 draft pick for him. “It’s all done with,” Belichick said. “On to the Jets.”

Haynesworth’s sudden departure did not generate much of a reaction among his now-former teammates. Not that there were many Patriot regulars available to the media in the allotted 45-minute period in the locker room, but those who did comment adopted a business-like it’s-not-our-decision mantra.

“That’s what coaches do,” said veteran running back Kevin Faulk. “We play football. We don’t worry about that.”

“During a football season, a lot of things happen to the team,” added linebacker Rob Ninkovich. “Injuries are part of it. Roster moves are part of it. We have to deal with things and turn the page, move on. I think whatever the staff does is obviously for the team to be competitive on Sunday. Whatever decisions are made, we respect them and move on, and on Sunday we go out and give the best effort for the team.”

Defensive back James Ihedigbo echoed the same theme.

“It’s one of those things (where) you know the organization is always going to look out for the best interest of the team in the long run. Whatever they feel, we have nothing else to do but support them and support the rest of the team, so that’s what we’re going to do,” said Ihedigbo.
The one player who seemingly stands to benefit the most from Haynesworth’s departure in terms of playing time is defensive lineman Kyle Love. But Love, whose solid play up front clearly made Belichick comfortable with jettisoning the 6-foot-6, 350-pound Haynesworth, wasn’t about to get drawn into a discussion about the roster move.

“I don’t really want to get into that. I don’t want to talk about it. That’s not my deal. You’d have to talk to Bill about that,” said Love, a 6-foot-1, 310-pounder in his second NFL season.

Love, who entered the league with the Patriots as an undrafted player despite a stellar career at Mississippi State, said he had been happy to see that New England had acquired Haynesworth from the Washington Redskins during training camp, even though that deal amounted to pushing Love down a bit on the depth chart.

“I was actually excited,” said Love. “I got to learn something from another D-tackle. He has a big name in the league. … I get to learn a lot of stuff from (Haynesworth and Vince Wilfork), so I kinda just soaked it all in.”

Haynesworth missed two games because of back trouble, and in the six games he did play in, he made only three tackles and did not register a sack. Against the Giants, Haynesworth was on the field for only nine plays. On his last play as a member of the Patriots, he was pushed aside by Giants guard David Diehl, opening a hole for Brandon Jacobs.’ virtually untouched 10-yard touchdown run that put New York on top, 10-0, with 9:10 remaining in the third quarter.

According to ESPNBoston.com’s charting, Haynesworth participated in133 of 561 snaps (including penalties) in his disappointing and now-abbreviated time with the team.

Haynesworth’s play had been so uninspiring that Jets coach Rex Ryan said he hadn’t exactly been game-planning for him.

“I’m sure he’s done some good things and has talent, but he wasn’t a player we were concerned with,” said Ryan.

He and the Jets may have to turn their attention to Love, who likely is to be the player picking up the extra snaps on Sunday. But Love said he won’t approach his job on the team any differently.

“I just know I have to step up even more now. But I always practice hard and play hard. The chip on my shoulder gets bigger each week,” Love said.

Love has racked up 24 tackles, 18 unassisted. He also has one sack.

As they prepare for the Jets, the Patriots made a couple of other moves Wednesday, the biggest putting safety Josh Barrett on season-ending injured reserve.

They also re-signed linebacker Niko Koutouvides and promoted Sterling Moore to the 53-man roster from the practice squad. On Tuesday they signed wide receiver Tiquan Underwood for a second stint with the team.
